Biography

Daniel Nie was born in Shanghai, the "New York City of China." He came to the United Sates form China in January 1981 on an art scholarship to receive formal Western higher education. After completing his education at Wake Forest University (1984), where he was granted a four-year full scholarship, Nie went on to his graduate studies at American University in Washington, DC. He earned his Masters of Art History and Fine Arts degrees in 1987. Nie worked at the Library of Washington College of Law, The Fillips Collection in Washington, DC, and Sara Lee Corporation. He taught for North Carolina Governor's School and several community colleges including Central Piedmont Community College in Charlotte and Cape Fear Community College in N.C. From 1987 to 1992 Nie taught Art History and Studio Art at St. Andrew Presbyterian College where he developed a painting technique which he called "yimpressionism."The artist combined the French impressionism with Chinese Xie-Yi traditions. This unique painting technique was presented at the US Southeast College Arts Conference in 1991. Since 1990, Daniel Nie has been developing a unique format of calligraphy known as "Coolligraphy," in which he uses the principle of ancient Chinese hieroglyphs to create "image-like words" (not square-word) with English letters. Because of his contribution to the field of calligraphy, today people in the West can enjoy the beauty of sumi-e through the English letters the same way that Chinese people enjoy the aesthetical brush stroke of their square characters. Nie's Coolligraphy has become a tool for training people's creativity. He conducts Mind and Spirit workshops along with other studio art lectures and presentations throughout the country. Nie is currently a full time artist. He teaches art lessons at local Arts Centers and his studio in the greater DC area.
